There are many ways that members of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ minister to one another, to their communities and to the world. We consider our congregations to be “mission stations.” They minister to the needy, the hurting and those who are seeking God. They work for justice in their communities. They help build houses and churches. Th ey invite persons into their church communities to share and nourish life in Christ. Disciples regions support congregations and their pastors. Regional ministers provide spiritual leadership. Regions help congregations find pastors. Regional staff members help congregations through periods of change, and sometimes through conflict. Disciples’ general and regional ministries assist in starting and revitalizing congregations. General ministries help the whole church to live toward a vision. They play a key role in equipping missionaries to serve around the world. They serve the elderly. They serve the disabled, the abused and victims of natural disaster and war. They organize people from many congregations to carry out mission projects in North America and abroad. They work for Christian unity and help the church communicate with itself and the world. They help finance church building, provide for retirement and help people support the whole church with financial gifts. They remember church history, educate young adults and train lay and ordained pastoral leaders. Disciples believe that all persons, lay and ordained are called to be ministers of the Gospel and ministers to one another.

Disciples of Christ churches live by the statement of identity, "We are Discipleso of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's table as God has welcomed us." The Disciples have a long heritage of openness to other Christian traditions - having come into existence as sort of a 19th century protest movement against denominational exclusiveness. At the local level and beyond, Disciples are frequently involved in cooperative and ecumenical work.
