Saint Joseph Church is the oldest parish in Hammond, established in 1879. The corner stone of the church building took place on June 17, 1912. The present altar of repose was carved of 4 kinds of marble in Pietrosanta, Italy. The height is 46 ft to the tip of the cross which stands on top, 22 ft wide and weights 30 tons. The design of the altar is Romanesque in keeping with the architecture of the church building. The gold inlaid and panel work are mosaics from Venice, Italy
